IRMan on FreeBSD

Has anyone successfully gotten libirman and lirc to compile and work on FreeBSD 4.4-STABLE? I recently purchased an Irman in the hopes of controlling XMMS with it but I can't seem to get it to work. libirman will compile fine with gmake, but whenever I go to run the included test program "test_io" with either /dev/ttyd0 or /dev/ttyd1 as the specified port, I recieve "Can't open port '/dev/ttydX' (Operation not supported)". Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks a lot.
