KDE 3.0.1 on FreeBSD 4.5 Stable

I installed KDE 3.0.1 on my FreeBSD 4.5-STABLE machine along with the latest XFree86 while logged in as root (I know)...anyway, I can type in "startx" as root, and get KDE to start up, but when I log into the machine under my normal user and type "startx", I get an error saying it could not find /var/log/XFree86.0.log .

I checked, and the log file is indeed there. I thought it might be a permissions issue, so I ensured that it was readable; that didn't work, so I changed the owner. Still no luck...

Any thoughts?

Brett

You should install xwrapper, /usr/ports/x11/wrapper from ports, so that you can run your x setup without being root.

Before you install the port, just make sure that your /etc/make.conf has the following line:

XFREE86_VERSION=4

Have you already done that ?

As a follow up, I just want to mention that I have KDE 3.0.1 running on FreeBSD 4.5 STABLE, and everything works great. XFree86 is also version 4 - the latest and greatest.

I realized my previous problems stemmed from a combination of a bad cvsupfile I used when cvsup'ing my ports and source, and the fact that mid-way I decided to change the location of where the cvsup files were putting everything.

Once I reinstalled everything and followed some of the tidbits offered by FreeBSD and FreeBSDForums (great site btw), I was up and running like a champ -- this after only 6 months and countless reinstalls. Thats what it takes I guess.
