mount /cdrom: READ_BIG ERROR

Hi friends,

been a while since i last was here. I have a problem with FreeBSD 5.3 stable. I have installed two machines, one of which has a Pioneer 106S DVD drive, and for some reason, it is not mountable:

Code:
#> mount /cdrom
acd0: FAILURE - READ_BIG HARDWARE ERROR asc=0x08 ascq=0x03 error=0
cd9660: /dev/acd0: Input/output error

the same occurs with:

Code:
#> mount -t cd9660 /dev/acd0 /cdrom

The other machine has a slimline Toshiba CDROM and can be mounted without problem.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem while trying to mount a CD or DVD? Is this a problem with the driver? Is there a workaround or solution?

I appreciate any advice anyone can offer.

Thanks,

Steven

Not that it makes much difference, but:

CORRECTION: the DVD drive is a PIONEER DVD-116. I installed the system from this drive, but after the installation it will not mount any type of media, not even the installation CD ?!?. I swapped the drive out with the Toshiba CD-ROM drive from the other machine, and it mounts properly. Clearly some sort of problem with this model. I tried to find something in the compatibility lists, to no avail. Anyone heard of similar problems? Perhaps I require a newer drive firmware? (i do not know which revision it currently has... i will have to swap the drives again...)

Just for kicks, i wrote a couple of eMails to the Pioneer support and hotline folks. As of yet, no response, and I reckon I better not hold my breath

You are not the only person with this pain - try mounting it with DMA disabled
by adding the line

hw.ata.ata_dma="0"

to your "/etc/loader.conf" file

Would suggest you update the firmware as you would normally like to use DMA

Excellent. Thank you very much for the tip, goggie. Turning off the DMA will probably do the trick. I will check the firmware, but I believe it es up to date.
