NetBSD, NIC problem
Hello!
I'm very new to netBSD (been using it for a month only). Here's the situation: I'm running NetBSD 1.6 and I'm trying to configure it as a gateway. The two NICs I will be using are both the same, 3Com 509B (Etherlink III). At first the machine wasn't intended to run as a gateway, so it has been running successfully with one 3Com card (ep0) for a week or so now (as a webserver for the local network): Webserver | Gateway ---- ((((Internet)))) | Workstation Now I would like to replace my gateway I have now with the webserver, BUT first I would like to do some testing before I put it in real use: TestGateway ---- ((((Dummy network)))) | Gateway ---- ((((Internet)))) | Workstation After inserting the second NIC and booting up, I tried to configure the ep1 interface but I just get an error about "Device not configured". And also I cannot locate my LAN or the Internet through ep0, which worked before (I cant ping my gateway nor any host on the Internet). But however, if I remove the second NIC, I can ping my Gateway, Workstation and anything on the Internet again. Some information that might be useful: dmesg when I had 1 NIC inserted: ... ep0 at isa0 port 0x300-0x30f irq 10: 3Com 3C509 Ethernet ep0: address 00:20:af:b7:e7:5c, 8KB byte-wide FIFO, 5:3 Rx:Tx split ep0: 10baseT (default 10baseT) ... dmesg when I had two: ... ep0 at isa0 port 0x300-0x30f irq 10: 3Com 3C509 Ethernet ep0: address 00:20:87:22:26:10, 8KB byte-wide FIFO, 5:3 Rx:Tx split ep0: 10baseT (default 10baseT) ... Maybe I need to post more of my dmesg ![]() As you probably can see I'm quite new to BSD so any help at all appreciated!! Thanks |

Apparently you are getting hardware conflict, be it on NetBSD or Windows. There really isn't anything you could do regarding to NetBSD but rather begin to diagnostic the problems from motherboard BIOS settings. For instance, disable PnP OS, toggle IRQ9 to use Legacy ISA or the other way (depends on your card which I know nothing about). Anyhow if I were you I would spend about $30 something (in US dollar) and grab 2 Linksys PCI cards instead. These days ISA netword cards are really next to useless, why bother to waste even a few seconds in configuration? |
