openbsd router...

Hello all,

I'm trying to use OpenBSD to replace my all in one adsl modem/router. This post is for validation of my requirements. Any constructive comments are very welcome.

I have a reasonable spec PC (2.4ghz celeron/256RAM) which I will install openbsd on. In this machine will be the following...
- Alcatel speedtouch PCI adsl modem
- 10/100 LAN interface

The LAN interface will be connected via a cross-over cable to an ethernet switch (plugged-in the up-link port).

All other LAN computers will connect via standard CAT5 cable into the ethernet hub. All routing/NAT translation will be performed by the openbsd box, as well as dhcp and ppp for the adsl modem.

Is this realistic/have I got something drastically wrong?

Thanks for your time

poncenby

Sounds good to me. You donīt necessarily have to have the router hooked up to the "uplink" port of the switch. Any of the standard switch-ports with a standard patch cable will do just as well.
One small suggestion... IMHO, your System sounds like it may be just a bit overpowered. That 2.4GHz CPU alone is probably running at over 70W. I would bet that a good PIII would more than suffice for your needs (and run somewhere near 30Watts cooler). Since routers are usually on 24/7 it is good to build them efficiently. The only time the P4 is going to be of real benefit is during the installation. My router/firewall is a Celeron Tualatin... and if felt like touching a well running system ... which I don't... I would probably go for something even less performant. For three years, I had a diskless 200MHz Pentium doing my routing with Linux. Worked like a charm.
