openbsd router...
Hello all,
I'm trying to use OpenBSD to replace my all in one adsl modem/router. This post is for validation of my requirements. Any constructive comments are very welcome. I have a reasonable spec PC (2.4ghz celeron/256RAM) which I will install openbsd on. In this machine will be the following... - Alcatel speedtouch PCI adsl modem - 10/100 LAN interface The LAN interface will be connected via a cross-over cable to an ethernet switch (plugged-in the up-link port). All other LAN computers will connect via standard CAT5 cable into the ethernet hub. All routing/NAT translation will be performed by the openbsd box, as well as dhcp and ppp for the adsl modem. Is this realistic/have I got something drastically wrong? Thanks for your time poncenby |

Sounds good to me. You donīt necessarily have to have the router hooked up to the "uplink" port of the switch. Any of the standard switch-ports with a standard patch cable will do just as well.
One small suggestion... IMHO, your System sounds like it may be just a bit overpowered. That 2.4GHz CPU alone is probably running at over 70W. I would bet that a good PIII would more than suffice for your needs (and run somewhere near 30Watts cooler). Since routers are usually on 24/7 it is good to build them efficiently. The only time the P4 is going to be of real benefit is during the installation. My router/firewall is a Celeron Tualatin... and if felt like touching a well running system ... which I don't... I would probably go for something even less performant. For three years, I had a diskless 200MHz Pentium doing my routing with Linux. Worked like a charm.Queenie is coming.. quick.. hide Poncenby's head! -Steven "You ride a horse rather less well than another horse would!", -Edmund BlackAdder Last edited by stevengs : February 15th, 2005 at 10:52 PM. |
