Ports Question

I am fairly new to BSD and I was looking at my ports tree and I have what looks like to seperate port trees for my applications.

I have /usr/ports/ and
/usr/ports-original/

What is the difference between these?

E.

Is it your own box or just host by company and they installed this box?

I am asking, because there is no such of ports-original.. I am guessing, they modified the ports, so create a backup to ports-orignal..

This is my machine at home. I just started running BSD and a friend helped me set it up. I believe he updated the ports tree.

My second questions is which one should I use to install software?

What's your uname -r?

>> I believe he updated the ports tree

If you are running a -RELEASE branch use ports-original, just because running -RELEASE can't (almost) cvsup and update your ports tree.

Thanks

I am running 4.2-RELEASE.

From what little I know cvsup is how you update your ports tree. If I cannot cvsup how to I update the ports?

You first need to bring your uname -r to 4.5-STABLE by cvsup'ing the source with the tag -> RELENG4 and buildworld.

To become a real BSD user you just can't get away from buildworld and recompile a custom kernel, as they are essential and something you will have to go thru sooner or later.

Well I might doing a kernel rebuild. I'm not too excited about doing it over a 56k modem though.

Slow connection speed has less or nothing to do with buildworld. cvsup, on the other hand, might take a few hours (56k) to complete if you have an empty /usr/src initially. That said, just install all-src of 4.2-RELEASE from CD to /usr/src as cvsup is smart enough to update the files when necessary, thus reducing traffic, but use a little more resource for your box.
What takes hours to complete is buildworld. Say p120 with 64mb RAM, it could take up to 10 hours.
If you considered yourself a BSD user, don't give your lame excuse (on dailup), just because if it really matters that much, you are not supposed to cvsup your ports tree in the first place.

You can do the CVSup during overnight when you are in the bed.. I always do that when I had modem long time ago..

I do not have the CD and don't recall ever saying I did.

Let me clear this up for you. I don't consider myself a BSD user.

It might be a lame excuse but I don't consider it important enough to waste the time to do it.

>> I do not have the CD and don't recall ever saying I did

Then get it via FTP or whatever way.

>> I don't consider myself a BSD user

Then low format your hard disk and install Linux or Windows.

>> I don't consider it important enough to waste the time to do it

Don't waste further time, just install Linux, just because you don't qualify to use BSDs, because of your poor learning attitude, technical and financal incapabilities.

Yes mezz said the same thing. Unfortunately my BSD box routes my dialup and if I screw it up I have no way to access the internet which makes trouble shooting it a pain. Thanx.

Blow away ports-original, then CVSup your existing ports tree to get the latest and greatest software available.

Contrary to what freebsd tries to peddle, you do NOT need to be running -STABLE to update your ports tree.

Nor do you need to run -STABLE to consider yourself a FreeBSD user. Nor do you need to run a buildworld. That's what the new binary upgrade system was developed for (in case you want to add the security fixes to your system).

Ok, it's time for you to re-read the sources listed in my .sig. You obviously haven't read them yet, otherwise you wouldn't be spouting this crap all over this forum.

Either start improving the quality of your posts (and posting the truth will go a *long* way to doing so) or stop posting.
