Has anyone here used Debian Linux Apt-get? How does it compare to the ports tree and portupgrade tool? Apt-get has every computer user at my old college declaring Debian the second coming.
Not that I am interested in running debian, I have played with various linuxes in the past, switched over to Openbsd, and then free, which I am now running on most of my machines. So far both bsds have been a much nicer experience. -jon door |

If you are comparing rpmfind vs. apt-get, note, both install software from precompiled binary, then that makes a little sense. ports system in *BSDs installs software by building from source, thus not compariable. >> switched over to Openbsd, and then free Since you have already done that, why bother to ask this question? You should know how ports mechanism works. |

Mostly I was looking to see what you thought about apt-get as a package system, and if it was comparable to the ports. Many people I have talked to say apt-get makes debian the “best” OS, while I’m not one to jump at their word and install linux, it is nice to see how different systems compare.
Thanks for the information about apt-get using precompiled binaries, that’s what I was looking for. -jon |

BTW it is also possible to download the source and make it automatically with apt-get. Just use the apt-get -b source <package> - command.

YES,
that´s right! there can be made separate entries in /etc/apt/sources.list beginning with deb-src! so you have deb & deb-src in debian and you have ports & packages in freebsd...
