Realtek drivers on freebsd 4.9
I just grabbed a sparkly fresh freebsd-4.9 iso and selected the visual kernel config screen prior to installation, and there is no driver listed for the Realtek-8139 chipset NICs - any suggestions please on what I should be selecting at this point?
cheers, christo

The RealTek 8139 cards are supported by the "rl" driver.
From what I read, and I also have some experience to support that, they are the worst piece of hardware on the market. ![]() A quote from the driver sources (/sys/pci/if_rl.c): Quote:
Oh well, mine is onboard... I told you earlier that my hardware stopped working after flashing the mobo bios. My rl0 always gave me the famous "watchdog timeout" then... ![]() M.

I didn't bother with any kernel config in the end.. I just went ahead with some tips from the Scorps and finally got it booted. I don't have any X right now, so I'll sort that tonight. Kinda looking forward to it actually... so I'm sure I'll be back with more questions!
By the way, what's Dusseldorf like to work in? christo ![]() |

well it gets scarier.. ifconfig doesn't list my device, so I grepped for rl0 in dmesg and got the following:
Code:
rl0: <Realtek 8139 10/100BaseTx> at device 8.0 on pci0 rl0: couldn't map ports/memory device_probe_and_attatch: rl0 attatch returned 6 A brief google suggests that this is overcome by disabling PnP in the BIOS, however, I have an old Phoenix BIOS on this box and no PnP option.. any ideas on how to overcome this? Is a BIOS upgrade an option do you think? laters ![]() christo |

I think you should upgrade your bios. But I don't take any responsibility if it breaks everything like my last bios update did.
![]() Another option is activating ACPI (you need to recompile the kernel then). Some machines don't work with ACPI at all, some don't work without... regarding Duesseldorf, I can't tell much about it right now. I'll ask my colleague later and PM you then, he comes from that area... M. |
