some questions
i need to setup a large database for mailing lists. i need the program to have fields for physical and email addresses, phone numbers, etc. i am new to things like this but i have heard a little about mail merge. i need features like this so i can use one template for many contacts. this database needs to work with email so that i can send a large number of emails. what is the appropriate program(s) for such?
how can i get microsoft office working on openbsd? thanks. |

lol... that takes the cake... LOL, i mean.. really why not have a hand at one of the free office suites, i.e. OpenOffice? (and the best part,... no discrimination... it works on a windows box too )-Steven |

haha,
i know it was a long shot but i'm pretty new to openbsd and figured i'd give it a shot. i previously have been running osx (a bsd flavor right?) so i thought no harm in asking. i truly am glad to have humored you. plus i thought i saw a screenshot of it running on openbsd a while back when i was researching the system. so how about my other questions? |

sorry, I suppose that wasn't very nice of me...
if you are absolutely determined, you probably could get it to run in a virtual windows environment or compatibility layer (vmware/wine). I think both rely a lot on Linux compatibility layers, so basically your are running an emulator in an emulator on BSD... I am convinced that lots can go wrong, and you know what Murphy says! Good luck.As far as the database goes.. what do you mean with "large"... (It sounds a little bit like a question of a would-be-spammer, that would likely never receive an answer.) What exactly do you want to do.. (example)? Typical unix databases are mysql, postgres etc. Lots of apps have interfaces to these databases or the standardized connection protocols (JDBC, ODBC). -Steven Last edited by stevengs : February 5th, 2005 at 10:30 AM. |

this is not for spamming... i need a program that is capable of storing info for many fields (not just electronic mail). i need it to store phone numbers, names, physical addresses, and when i need to send emails i will need to send many (right now, a few hundred, but later on who knows, 1000?, 1000000?). Again i am new to this sort of stuff but i came across a program called Filemaker ($$$) that seemed to fit the bill for the most part. Microsoft Office also seemed appropriate but i don't know what the capacity or stabiliity of the address book is. But if there is an equally good open source app i would use it. I know i must be overlooking (or am entirely ignorant of their existence) many options/programs available to me. I am just wondering what these options are. thanks.
