Unable to start Xserver(freesbsd4.4)
I have a pentium90 with 32mb of ram and a hd of 2gb.
I just downloaded freebsd 4.4 into a CD and installed it enabling the X window+Kde. All is done right, except one thing. When I try to configure X with XF86Setup I have the following error: Unable to start X server. Launching XF86Setup I do this settings: CARD) card -->> svga chipset -->> clgd5430 (I have a cirrus logic) videoram -->> 256K Monitor) SuperVga 800x600 @ 56Hz Mode Selection) 800x600 color dept -->> 8bpp then I click Done, but it appears that message. Am I missing some steps?!? This is the first time I installed freebsd.

Not enough info. Anyway, mouse device usually cause problems the most, so make sure it's properly configured. Also, before asking something like this, you should read your log.

Right, here more infos.
I tried this configuration for X server: Run XF86Setup and set: [Mouse], I clicked to apply because the mouse was already configured and the mouse works. [Card], Cirrus Logic GD543X [Monitor], SuperVga 1024x768 @ 87Hz etc [Resolution], 800x600 with 8bpp Clicked done the X server run (even if the image is not too much centered) and then I clicked to "Save the configuration". I said to me.."I will center it later". After finished the installation and rebooted the system, with root access, I run X which gave to me this: (--) SVGA: PCI: Cirrus Logic GD5430 rev 34, Memory @ 0xfe000etc (--) SVGA: clgd5430: Specifying a Clocks line makes no sense for this driver (--) SVGA: chipset: clgd5430 (--) SVGA: videoram: 1024k (**) SVGA: clocks: 25.23 etc (**) SVGA: Using 8 bpp, Depth 8, Color weight: 666 (--) SVGA: Maximum allowed dot-clock: 85.500 MHz (--) SVGA: There is no mode definition named "800x600" Fatal server error: No valid modes found I would like to give more complete logs, but I have no idea where I can found them (I tried at /var/log, and viewed the logs there but no one contained this). The above line I copied them by hand.... If you need I will try to download the XF86 config file. TX. |

Your monitor isn't configured correctly. You can't run 800x600 at the Mhz you set it to. I've had so many problems with my old 486's monitor and that. For me it was just guess and check but it's still not right. Make sure you consult your manual.

It works!
I followed the suggestion of this article @ http://www.onlamp.com/lpt/a//bsd/20...BSD_Basics.html and set: card -->> svga chipset -->> clgd5430 monitor-->>Extended SuperVGA etc 800x600 and 16bpp. TX to all! ![]() |
