Using PPPoE w/ DSL - URGENT!! PLEASE!
I have a FreeBSD 5.0-RELEASE system setup. I RTFM'd alot and eventually figured out how to get ppp (NOT pppd) to talk PPPoE with my DSL modem to get a connection with my ISP.
All was well. Then, "something" happened. I swear, I do not know what. My configuration files all appear identical, and the security output shows nothing wonky. But now, the DSL modem isn't returning a "carrier" to ppp, so when in interactive mode, I don't even get the first capitalized "P" in the "ppp ON systemname>" prompt when I dial. Thinking it was a problem with my ISP, I plugged my Win98 box into the DSL modem and attempted a connection to verify that it still would not connect. Guess what. It connected. Just fine. In fact, blazingly fast and with no errors or warnings. So, as usual, "something" has changed from 4 weeks ago to about 5 days ago that makes my BSD box unable to connect to my ISP, but still allows my Win98 box to do so just fine. This is my primary system and mail is beginning to backlolg as I've been without consistent net access for coming upon a week now. Any help would be greatly appreciated, please. -Mike Last edited by mkaufman811 : August 25th, 2003 at 10:29 PM. |

In case anyone is interseted (which I don't think anyone is, considering the amazing lack of responses), I figured out the problem.
In the end, it turned out to be a complete DUH on my part. The NIC that I was using to connect to the DSL modem got zapped ("somehow") and it's MAC address was reset to 00:00:00:00:00:00. Luckily, it's one of these nice modern NICs that allow it the MAC address to be set. After setting the MAC address to something vaguly similar to my other NIC (but obviously different, duh), I was able to connect to my ISP just fine as if nothign was wrong. So, let that be a lesson: when using PPPo**E**, make sure you have a valid **E** to use. -Mike |
