using the freebsd os
Can anyone tell me the advantages of using the
freebsd system. I've installed it to get my feet wet as they say. I'm not trying to be optimistic here but I can't really see what the fuss is about. Example I've tried several browsers and none of them is really all that great, In fact while visiting some of the websites that I normally would with Explorer the site is all messed up. The writing is very small I can barely read it (I enlarged the font so I could read most writing),table structures are messed up, images are realy small. I have the apache server installed on it I've not been able to get it to work right. (I have a two computer network in which I use the other computer for a gateway) In fact I can't find where to start the apache server. I've looked through all the directories (I think) and still have not found it. I've tried using freebsd as the gateway for my network all though it picks up the adsl modem I've not been able to get it to work. I'm not putting the system down, I've not had enough time with it for that, But any input would be helpful in deciding to keep it. Thanks |

The problem with the text size being too small is probably because some sites use PX for their font sizes (i.e. <....style="font-size: 8px">). Not all browsers render that the same!
More people should be using EMs insteads PXs because they render better on different browsers. To start Apache, try using the command "apachectl start". I sure hope that someone else can help you with all of the other problems! ![]() Good Luck, Joe of 4Life ![]() |

menator -
Many things in life require some sacrifice up front for greater gain later. FreeBSD is such a system. It does take more work to understand, but when you do understand, you can do anything fast. FreeBSD is not about giving you convenient ways to do things, but about giving you absolute power over everything that happens on your system. What you really need to do is understand Unix in general. Try www.ugu.com as a starting place. Also try 'man hier' on the command line, to give you an idea of the Unix standard directory layout.
