vncserver on freeBSD runs much slower then one on Linux?
I am a newbie and I have created a new server with freeBSD 4.5 (stable version) on an AMD 1GHz system. After many tries, I have most stuffs running ok. However, I have noticed that the vncserver is running much much slower than a Linux on an old Pentium II 350Mhz system.
I am using vnc-3.3.3.2_1 and XFree86-4.0.x for FreeBSD but I am not sure what the version is on Linux. Has anyone experienced the same problem? Any inputs would be appreciated.

Looks like it's the network card driver problem
Hi,
I did some simple network test with ftp. It's causing lots of collisions and so it's owefully slow to transfer a large file. It took 1263 seconds to transfer 3675286 bytes (2.04 KB/s) on the 10BaseT line. I had to install freeBSD on the Linux system to confirm and I encountered the same problem. Both system uses the RealTek 8139 network card and I am about to blame the RealTek driver. Has anyone experienced any network problem with this type of network card? |

Fixed!!!
By adding "media 10baseT/UTP" at the end of ifconfig_rl0 line in /etc/rc.conf.
For some reason the driver cannot handle autoselect. |

Unfortunately RealTek 8139 chipset is not so compatible with *BSDs. It's being the worst in NetBSD. Guess what, even in a 100baseT full-duplex (with switch) local network, you will have to downgrade it to use 10baseT. Or else, you would see watchdog timeout error.
The best low-end chipset would be the one (Linksys) that uses dc driver. |
