xfree86 blurred

so I installed FreeBSD last night for the first time and im trying to get xfree86 setup. I ran xf86cfg and it seems that no matter what I do when i startx it works but everything is blurred and I all I can see are like two message boxes, one of them saying something about GNOME and the other something about an address, can someone tell me what the problem is?

Try looking in your monitor's documentation to find its horizontal sync and vertical refresh rates. Furthermore, see if there is a "phase" adjuster on the monitor. Also, pick the highest resolution that is possible for your monitor. You can always lower it later.

I had the same problem trying to use GNOME - try KDE instead, get it from the install medium under the option 'configure xserver' I think, its more stable than GNOME and looks better too.
