It is possible that you need to 'inspire' cron into thinking it has a cronfile to action. Try a crontab -e and just save the file.
According to Sod's Law, buttered toast lands butter side down, when dropped.
Per nature, cats always land on their feet.
So, what happens when you strap buttered toast to the back of a cat and throw it out a window?

Did you edit crontab for the user root, or edit the /etc/crontab file?

    Is the cron daemon running?

What does the cron logfile say? (/var/log/cron)
