A "CPanel" type app for IIS?
I dunno if any of you have ever used CPanel before when making sites in PHP. It's a web-based server package that helps automate most activities in an Apache server from creating domains and Web Host Management on the web hosting service's side, to a client-side front end that includes File Management and even "phpMyAdmin" Web app that allows the client to manage his MySQL Database (provided he was given on from the web host via WHM). We have this app installed on our Linux server and it runs rather well.
Well, right now I'm in kind of a pickle because I need to find a similar type of application that can be used against our IIS 6.0 server located on our Windows 2003 Server. The idea would be to find an app that provides the same type of functionalities that CPanel provides and allow for my boss to create Windows-based domains the same way he has been creating Linux-based domains (through his browser). Not to mention the same type of client-side front end that, aside from the typical site management, it would also include a DB plugin that allows the client to manage his/her MySQL or SQL Server 2000 DB through the browser. As you can see, it's a rather large request. But I hope some of you can help me out with this seeing that DevShed has been my end-all to programming and web-related probelms Thanks in advance. |

I don't think there is a good package, although cpanel is working on a Windows version.

My personal opinion about such an application is that it would be a very bad idea on a Windows platform, in terms of system security.
Because Windows apps, especially server apps, are so tightly intertwined with the OS, any flaws or holes in a web-based control panel could grant a malicious user unauthorized access or allow them to perform unauthorized actions. I'm not trying to say that Windows is a bad OS (although my personal belief is that it is not suitable for a server), or that cPanel on Linux is completely secure and stable. What I am saying is that it would be much easier for an attacker to cripple a server, should they intend to, on a Windows platform than Linux, with such an application.

I disagree. As long as it's made by the people who make cpanel, I don't see security as an issue. ... They even tell you that you're running on a proxy and you shouldn't login!

As mentioned Plesk would really be my only suggestion for a stable/secure control panel for Windows.
In my opinion, don't run Windows ![]() |
