Adding other companie's website link to our site--legal issues?
Hello Mates,
One question with law. Can I add randomly any companie's website address to our company's website? Say, I want to add weblink to coke/microsoft/University URL's from our company site. Now do I have to notify those companies about this? Or we can add at will. Any legal issues? Any response would be a great help. |

Taneem,
I can't foresee any legal issues besides you having to put a note up that you're not affiliated with any of those companies. See your legal counsel for details and the right wording, if you don't have legal representation, PM me. From an other perspective, why would you want to do that? There's no benefit in linking to others whatsoever.

There's no legal issues with linking up, however, as mentioned, you may want to put a disclaimer in your privacy policy stating there are 3rd party links on the site and that your privacy policy doesn't include the practices of the 3rd party companies. @Thr3ddy: There are times that 3rd party links are beneficial... or at least useful. I run a computer company, and have about 15 3rd party links on my site, all computer related, and I get a number of people clicking to those sites from mine. Of course, the beneficial part comes in play when I'm an affiliate for those companies and receive money every time someone buys something from one of my referral links. |

Precisely ![]() But when you have to ask, there's no benefit; linking to a random website while not having an agreement with the site's owner will not benefit you, neither monetarily speaking nor SEO-wise. |

There are certain instances that many companies would rather you did not have their name on your site...
some instances might be..Adult material oriented sites...warez, controlled substance paraphernalia, controversial political issues...etc...etc... if in question it's always best to ask them... many companies actually post "linking policies" |

linking policies are always a good thing to follow. I was hit a few times for simply putting the wrong wording for my anchor text.
