Hi
I have been in the website designing department for some time now. I have general basics of how to use my control panle from my host etc etc. Thats it though, basic knowledge. Well, I have a friend that decided that he and I should go into buisiness together and start a hosting site. So we purchased a dedicated server for the year and I am asking advice from all, how or what are the best steps to take in learning what I will need to know to setup hosting, support etc. What should I get to read and what should I learn so I will know what I am doing when I am in my control panel setting up accounts. This is a project for me and I just like to get pointed into the right direction. Thanks |

You should have gone through with cPanel manual which is especially designed to familiarize new users with the cPanel interface and to provide extra knowledge for new users.
The cPanel flash tutorials might be also helpful to you. |

Well, the control panel I am working with is "Plesk". I have readi all the onfromation they provide but it's a bit confusing. See, that's where I need assistance on things I can read to have an understanding of what the the things "Plesk" has.
Basic stuff so to speak. |

This may seem funny, but ask your competitors! I was looking into starting something similar with game servers, and I asked some local people. To my surprise (and to their credit) they were happy to help. Their suggestions and attitudes prepared me for some experience which lead me to other work, but still, it was those email conversations that made the difference in the beginning.
Plesk and cPanel are all admin programs, like myphpadmin is using php for mysql. If there's a problem and you don't know how the system is configured, plesk can mess it up. I'd recommend getting to know your .conf files very closely. Some panels like webmin still work in spite of manual editing of the .conf files (surprisingly not all do). This may be useful to know as you shift gears from learning to working and back. If any system is preventing you from seeing under the hood, I can't recommend it. This prevents you from learning, and therefore, from fixing! I used bash + python scripts and webmin under slackware for about 2 months then started some other work, but that's just me ![]() oh, and btw, only use a maximum of 80% of your harddrive space at all times (then get another hdd). Less seek time the better and less likelyhood of hdd failure or errors from data overflow man quota cheers sf2k |

my advice is do not start doing any business without having a clue how to manage and configure everything , how to face possible and upcoming problems and generally without organising every details in order to get started well.
