Hi,
I’m planning to develop a site called FileServer.org, but I just can’t decide what to do with it. I originally planned to develop it as a online hard-drive like that of xdrive.com. But a friend suggested that I make it into something like yousendit.com / rapidshare.de. So I decided to turn to the community for help. Please tell me which idea is better, or if you have another suggestion. Your help would be really appreciated. Thanks! (Btw, I hope I posted this in the right forum) |

1. Register fileserver.org
2. ??? 3. Profit!! ![]() But seriously, why not do both? Start with the online xdrive type idea, since that works better with the name of "fileserver.org", but expand into the other too. They're both very similar ideas. This is probably best moved to the Business Help forum. I'm sure a mod will take care of that.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you don't have the idea and the burning desire to make it happen, you are off to just about the worst possible start for creating a business. The vague 'I want to start a business' cry is seldom met with sympathy by the cold cruel world, the market typically is only interested in better/cheaper alternatives to current products (though it is possible, sometimes, to sell a product no one had ever considered as necessary, for instance computers). You need to discover an unmet (or poorly met) need and then develop a way to meet that need. Anything else is just a waste of your time.

Your not going to make enough profit for a site such as yousendit. Serving files
such as yousendit does requires no 10 or 100MB port it requires a 1GB. You'll never cover the cost of adverts on the site nor will google pay enough. Most datacentres will refuse to serve this site after so long. FileServer.org, is also registered. |

is it registered to you?
If you own the domain and you have a bag full of cash then you really aren't as bad off as the previous posts indicated.
Actually owning that domain isn't such a big deal either. I mean if you are just rolling in the dough and somehow feel inspired by the phrase filesever.org - how about a giganews type setup? (see newzbin.com) they rake in monthly dues plus advertising. You really can't compete by offering online space anymore. I work for an ISP that gives our client's 2gb of webspace w/ standard package. That's old news. I would look consider acually serving files at fileserver. But what type of content do you possess competence or connections in???? |
