Can't find work!
I'm a recent graduate in Computer Science from University of Toronto with about 1-2 years of experience in Web Development (mainly LAMP environment). I got my experience while i was in school. I'm having such a hard time find a development position here locally or else where (i mainly apply to jobs in the Toronto and near by areas and in New York). I apply to about 8-10 jobs everyday. I usually go to Monster, Careerbuilder and Dice to apply for jobs. I have been out of school for over a month now. I applied to about 100 jobs so far and i yet to get even one response back. I only apply to jobs where i know I have some experience and where i meet most of the job requirements. I carefully review the job description and change my CV accordingly before applying.
I want to hear for other recent grads who had trouble finding work after graduating or anyone who can give a advice on may what i might be doing wrong or what i should do. |

Maybe you can post your resume for someone to critique...
Hell, I can't find work either, but that may be because I'm 14 years old.

I don't know and am not a recent grad, just want to wish you luck. A month really isn't a long time.

I'm in recruitment advertising. When you apply online - your resume goes through a series of filters and 9 times out of 10, doesn't reach teh HR person. If you see a job that fits your skills really well, find the company's address, write a great cover letter (with bullet points), include some samples of your work, and fedex your resume to the company c/o Human Resources.

gimp's wisdom is truly beyond his ears (he's got an external brain unit, but we don't like to talk about it
)Have your resumé reviewed by your careers officer at college, and anyone your parents know who hire people. 100 posts and no response, it has to be something with the resumé especially if you're tailoring the covering letter for each position. 1 month, not a long time, and don't take the first job that comes up. I don't know what it's like in Canada, but experience is a big thing. You may need to 'big up' some details of past projects (you may not even have them in your CV), but potential employers want to see experience Also, apply for jobs directly to companies. My experience with monster and a few of the other companies is that the the agencies post fictitious jobs trawling (trolling) for resumés. Check the want ads in local publications. If I was hiring, I wouldn't be using "catchall" organisations, because I'd want the position filled, and I wouldn't wat to trawl through 800,000 CV's (current, of course they are) Just my €0.02

If I may...(I'm one of the few people in my group of friends who is going to grad school) but the job market in Toronto sucks royal.
A few questions though: -Did you take advantage of PEY? You should have, or at least tried. - Like everyone else has suggested, have you had your resume reviewed? What about coverletters? - Are your cover letters generic or do you tailor your cover letters to say 'help me help you at your company'? Having said that, its only been one month. I know people who graduated in '03 without steady work. Be patient. |

I've heard about those screening process. Usually its a software that screens your resume. It's discouraging to hear that your resume is not looked at by a human but rather a software. I usually apply via email. I may fax my resume occasionally. But the advice you gave me is even better than faxing your resume. Mailing my CV directly to the Human Resourse might just end in the hands of the right person. Thank for the advice. Appreciate it. |

Ahem ... I work in Human Resources, when you fedex your resume to "HR" at large companies it goes in a file and you get a postcard. When you apply online with us, your resume goes directly to the Hiring Manager, who is the one who cares. We are a company employing over 150,000 people. As you can imagine, what I say is true, though medianox may have a point more pertinent to tiny companies (a few hundred people). Research your company. Know something about the company you are applying for. Echo this in your cover letter. For example, what the company does, how their stock is performing (if applicable, especially if its doing well), what the business model is, and who the CEO is for starters. You should know all this. Also double check your resume and cover letter before you send it off. I have seen countless resumes which referenced one of our largest competitors as the company the applicant is applying to. This doesn't bode well for fulfilling the "attention to detail" requirement ![]()

I had my resume critiqued by a career counselor at my campus and I’ve had advice from other people currently in a similar job market. My resumes have been refined a lot since last three months. Its still an on going process which I guess is good. Perhaps, i can post my resume here and get some advice from developers such as you. |

Change all your personal details first, and, I dunno, perhaps the Business Help forum might be a better forum
You might consider asking a mod to move the thread there to carry it on @Peter, I'm suggesting a move to the OP, the OP should request such a move ![]() |

No, I don't have PEY experience. I know some of my friends who did. The were not so impressed by what they ended up doing at their PEY position. One friend was hired at IBM but ended doing lotus notes. He tells me his position didn't require programming at all. I instead decided to finish my degree and not go for PEY. I did get experience on campus working as Web Developer with the departments and i also worked with a company off campus developing and designing web sites. My cover letter is generic because i only apply to Web Developing jobs in PHP (mostly) mainly because I have experience in it already. I hardly go for software analyst/engineering jobs. |
