Creating a s-corporation

I've spoken with a CPA about a business I am planning to start (software development industry, but that's not important). We've come to a decision that a S-corporation best suits my needs. I pretty much have 2 options, one is to pay an attorney to do this for me, or I could do it myself.

Paying someone else to do it would a chunk of change, so I'm thinking I should atleast look at one of these "self s-corporation kits" and decide if I could do it myself or if I need to pay someone else to do it.

Unfortunately whenever I search online for these I just get a load of these "get rich in 1 weekend" scams to starting your own business, when I'm really looking for "start a business realistically" kit.

I was hoping maybe it wouldn't hurt to ask a few people if they've purchased one of these and perhaps could recommend one that shown itself useful (providing the needed forms, explaining the information you have to write in, how you obtain information etc)

thanks

Don't purchase one of those ebook. If you are looking to incorporate online, goto legalzoom or a company like that. Pay attention to the type of entity you create. LLC's have advantages and disadvantages over S-Corps and you should do your research before incorporating an entity.

Other good resources are the government SBA office (small business administration)

(btw I have already incorporated a while ago). I know the differences between the different kind of business set ups, and how taxes work, just the paperwork part was being difficult.

I wouldn't of ever used services from legalzoom or anything, as the process isn't that complex, no point in paying someone for doing zombie work. Just navigating through government website is not a fun experience, and I had a much easier time throwing down $100 and just have all the documents I need sitting on my lap rather than spend ingforever going through all of their crap.

merely a time is money thing.

Fair enough

I've always had great luck with Legalzoom though--cheaper and faster than a lawyer. Not as cheap as just doing it yourself though

By your lonesome its dangerous. With an lawyer its expensive. Legalzoom is a nice middle group. I used it for my s-corp and LLC just try to stay away from all the upsells.

IMO stuff like legalzoom is doing you more harm than good. yeh you know it's going to be done right, but your missing out on the opportunity to learn how things work (it's all much simpler than it sounds). I've been reading up on it for a while, and I've got a bunch of advice from my accountant, so I feel I have a good idea on how things will go for me (I guess I will be finding out soon enough)

the whole process of incorporating with your state and getting s-corp status with the IRS is really about 3 or 4 forms, a small government fee, and some waiting.
