We have recently seen something new when making online business purchases, the "customer accounting code".

What is this and why would web sites be requesting it?

You'd probably get a much more effective answer if you asked the actual company that requests this code rather than people here. In fact, I'm willing to bet that the company in question has a FAQ page that details this to some extent.

Unfortunately no entry on the FAQ pages. Figured it was a general business practice I simply hadn't become aquainted with which is why I asked the question on a general business forum.
