Establishing Web Site Updating Protocols

Hello,

I recently started working at a small company (about 12 people) and each are responsible for a section on our web site. However, this hasn't been working.

Our staff members, who are not tech savvy, have no interest in using the system we have no to update their site. Some have even forgotten what sections they are responsible for. A lot of the pages say "coming soon".

We need to rethink our protocol from the ground up and I was wondering if anyone had any proven advice for our situation.

Thank you

Before we give any advice, could you tell us how your existing system worked?

At the moment, there is no official protocol for updating the web site is in place. Basically the core site was developed and was handed off to the employees to manage.

Since almost it's inception, hardly anyone has touched CMS. Updates that have occurred haven't been on a regular basis. It was basically when someone got around to doing it. I don't really know much more since I only recently came on board.

What sort of information are you seeking?

Whatever system you have on board. From what you say, it's a CMS.

First, you need to figure out why the employees don't update the CMS.

Is it because:
  • The CMS is hard to update? More specifically, is the CMS requirements at the tech level of the employees?
  • The employees just don't know what to put on their specific sections?
  • There is no push from the employer? If updating the website isn't official work from the employer, or the employer doesn't actively pursue the point...

You should first start with asking the staff members. There are only 12, right? So ask each one their opinion. Push for a clear answer, and if they complain about the CMS, ask them to show you what is difficult.
