GPL V2 Question

i have read GPL V2 1991 twice now and i see no where it says they must keep powered by footer copyrights (in a program/script) as a php developer i wonder, do i develop stuff under gpl v2 or another lic?, am i wrong or am i right?, also if i am right what lic would you recommend i release my stuff under? or should i just go and encrypt my software and slow down my site due to having unencrypting then running the scripts

Footer messages or any web site content (other than code) have nothing to do with the GPL. Your choice of license depends on your philosophy, economics, and user base. If your only interest is making money then the GPL is probably not for you. If you want to contribute back to the community and let other developers contribute code back to you then the GPL might be ok.

You can always write your own simple license or look at the hundreds of others out there.

i do want to give back to the community but i also want the community not to rip me off, i mean i want it to be opensource but i also want something that says says they will keep my footer message on the outputted content, or if they change it at least something like base from..., i am a bad lawyer (lol) would this work?, "by using this software you agree not to remove the outputted copyright message and also agree to keep it on everypage at the bottom..."

That's an advertisement clause, similar to the current revision of the PHP License; and such additions are incompatible with the GPL (though are still considered Free).

Moving this to the Business Help forum, as that's where issues of copyright/etc. should be discussed. Thanks.
