Is a company logo required by law?
I'm planning to start a credit card website/business. Does anyone know, is it required by law to have a company logo? And if so, then how do I register my logo or copyright it? Your advice would be appreciate.

You can run your business the way you want... if you choose you don't want a logo, then you don't need one. However, you will either need a business name or classify yourself as DBA. However, if you do have a logo, and want to copyright it, check out this site |

Thank you guys for the responses. So is it ok to have a logo and not register it? If I choose to register it, how much would it cost me?

You don't have to register it if you don't want. Visit the website I linked you to for information such as pricing. |

Copyright protects the artwork itself. This does not, however, establish a trademark. See uspto.gov
;-)

It has nothing to do with the law however everything to do with branding which is part of trademarking and copyright laws.

I don;t think that the logo is compulsory in running a business, however, for a long term solution, you have to have a logo.
A logo is just like your face. People will see your face first before starting to talk to you... ![]() |

A logo also doesn't need to be set in stone. AAA (Automobile Association of America), a well known organization changed its look around the start of the dot bubble to look more trendy. Soft Drinks are regularly changing their look. But there does need to be consistency. This is a matter of color pallet as much as it is a specific logo. For example, take my personal site medialint.com my business card has the same logo and the same 50s appliance green and black color scheme. For a long time I had that logo as my forum logos too. It's just a personal site and the branding mostly involved my music, but that's the general idea. At my day job we have also approved artwork and logos, approved strategies for logo placement and approved color pallets to use on web pages and brochures. To get access to the resource center with all this stuff you need to go to a mandatory branding class.
Branding. Once you start to really establish an identity its time to apply for a trademark or service mark. You should enlist a lawyer to help with that. Copyright ... just fill out the form and follow the instructions and send in your check and submission. |
