Is it illegal to have similar content as another website
Is it illegal to have similar content as another website as long as its not a clone site? I've seen a credit card website with template design that is similar to the style, color scheme, and quality of another. Your response would be appreciate.

This is a question that has been asked quite a bit around here. There are millions of websites out there, so there are always bound to be sites that are similar to others. If you see a site that you like, it's not alright to clone, copy, or in any way duplicate the site, but you can use the various sites to help yourself in coming up with ideas to design your own.

You can also find templates you can purchase or download off of google (or another search engine).

Not sure legally, but IMO if it had similar style, color, scheme etc when I viewed both sites. I would be hard pushed to believe one was not a clone of the other.

IMO is you don't want to be accused of being a clone site, make it at least somewhat different. Don't use similar aspects like style and color. Just opens you to a can of worms.

Hmm, I would agree with the above comments and add that web design is a form of art and with the endless combinations of color, content, themes, etc there are bound to be similar web sites out there. It is illegal to have any design infringe on trademark(s) and/or copyright(s).

it is pointless to have the same, exact content with the other websites as if Google knows it, your site will be banned and no one will never ever know about your site anymore.

A search engine may rank one of them and drop other sites if all have same content. Better have different content even though it's relevant.

If you end up stealing another website's words, images, and design, then its copyright infringement.

But if your content is similar, its not illegal (Ex. Think about LA TIMES AND NY TIMES. Same content in terms of breaking news, but they're not "stealing" the other website's content. Just Similar posted news)

Another thing to bear in mind is that you may end up being seen as an affiliate... this might be a good thing for you in terms of boosting the rep of a site... but you don't want to end up annoying the owners of the original and possibly even end up in some kind of a legal battle - obviously depending on who they are

There are millions of sites that are similar, provided you don't copy the site word for word etc then no it's not illegal to have a similar one.

Well Its not illegal if you are not copying other websites content, design, logos, or any other content that is copyrighted. Also its not a good practise to copy such information as google's engine will figure out such websites and they will be banned.
