Smile Monetising forums

I'm interested in developing a new forum but it would be great to hear from some of you which forums you use/admire which have done a great job of creating a community and then getting that community to spend money.
All tips very welcome

Very difficult. I have one forum which is dong pretty well in terms of posts and yet generates virtually nothing.

Another I frequent is extremely popular, has hundreds of posts per day and yet relies on banner ads which generate very little.

No - but it would be interesting to ask the powers that be here if they make bundles of cash from the forums!

I think it depends upon the specific community you are going to target. If I would have develop a forum I shall target teens.

I expect DS do ok from it with an Alexa ranking like this however I read somewhere that plentyoffish.com who have an Alexa of 1,312 make in the region of $4,000+ a day from AdWords. True or not I don't know but POF claim they get 600,000 visitors a day so I guess you can make a mint that way but need something special to drag the traffic in.

POF is a totally free site, just ad revenues, I admire www.lookitsme.co.uk as it's just a funky interface - that's a community with upselling of members faceparty style for extras.
