You are trying to make this a black-vs-white issue. But it isn't. There is no "good" or "evil" in the Intellectual Property world.... Piracy doesn't hurt anybody. There's no injured party. It's freedom vs. imprisonment. No, sorry, it's not. It's freedom of imprisonment - if you want to regard it this way. M.

I think, if software companies really wanted to stop piracy, they could. I believe that many see piracy as a sort of 'free advertising'. It's hard to explain and it sounds a bit daft, but I don't think it hurts, for example Adobe to have people using pirated copies. Think about it, people who use pirated versions, will for the most part NEVER have intended to pay the $600 or whatever to start with, so I don't think they actually lose money. All it does is increace the user base, and thus more popular (reputation, user forums, tutorials etc etc) which in turn will sell more copies to people who can, and would pay the money. Does any of this make sense or am I way too tired already?
ps hope this makes up for my piratical idiocy above

That does make quite a bit of sense. But there has to be a little scare that piracy will get you a nice big fine, because without that little scare, very few people would pay for the software. |

We have other problems that are far more likely to screw up this species. Piracy is not going to be a serious problem, as far as I can see, ever. It has little effect on anyone except those developing the media involved.
Maybe it's global warming, pollution and lack of energy sources threatening the hell out of our way of life. Maybe it's some big meteor or the embodyment of Satan destroying the faithful. Whatever it is, I think we can all safely find a believable scenario which is more likely to kill us than piracy. My personal favoured solution would be worldwide, undiscriminatory, obligatory birth control. Get some proper use out of science. Like, blast the air with chemicals until every human's sterile. Yay for productive family planning. ![]()

No matter what it is, but piracy is an artifically pushed problem to distract from the real one(s)...

No, you missed the point completely; it was: Don't pay for anything. There's no injured parties, of course. Rob, steal, cheat and pilfer your way through life. Dodge the IRS. Use any money you do get as scrap paper and in turn, scrap paper it becomes. You won't be able to buy anything with it, because there is nothing to buy. On the other hand you won't have any money because there are no jobs. Anarchy.

Sorry, didn't see that you weren't talking about interlectual property. Ok, good point.
