paperless check processing

First off, thank you for reading this.

The organization I work for would like to introduce the capability of processing checks online. The added infrastructure/services needed to facilitate this automatically is too expensive and too difficult to implement.
I've come up with the idea of populating a database, and having accounting process the check manually. However, we need a system that allows them to do a "paperless check" where they could just enter the account #, routing # and other info and have the check processed.
Has anyone come across or had any experience with services like the one I'm speaking of? Accounting claims that there is such a thing, but couldn't find it right away.

Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know if this will help or not, but you can accept e-checks through Paypal (and probably others as well). If nothing else you could scour their developers manual and online docs to find out what info you need to gather so that you have captured everything you need to process the checks manually.
