Selling Software?
Ive created a small program that could be of some utility to students of all shapes and sizes. In my complete arrogance, I believe that I could actually charge a small fee for distributing this software to prospective 'customers'.
I would like to know if there is anything specific I would have to do in order to proceed in a legal manner. Besides the issue of attempting to make the software un-shareable and compiling the source as much as possible (yes i realize there are limitations here as well) .. what do I need to include in terms of licensing? Is there some specific legaleese I need to include in my source code? In my installer? On my download page? Ive done some googling with limited success, wanted to stop by the shed to see if anyone had any experience with this, or if I might be able to get some referrals to very simple 'shareware' type sites that are selling software. Any help is much appreciated. Please dont ![]()

You picked the wrong forum for your question. Next time try the business forum or the lounge.
You need to pick a license and define a TOS and make them available to people. Other than that you'll have to ask someone else.

Yea see the moderators rarely read every thread. You hit the little triangle button on a post to request moderation. Which, btw, I have already done for you.

Software License Agreement might help you out. I would also recommend having an attorney review it as well to make sure you are well protected

I've done my share of selling software both online and offline. The main issue is making sure your software has a really good TOS. I recommend getting a lawyer to sit down with you and work one out. An alternative method is the most sketchy but it works. Start with installing some high-profile game or application. Photoshop or any Game like F.E.A.R, HL2, etc. read their TOS and their agreement. What you can do is follow their format not to closely mind you since you can't COPY it. I'd say just read it -- write down what they cover. Limitations of Liability, etc. Then write up your own -- still have a lawyer look it over.
