What is ATEK?
I received a lead for a possible job and the person passing on the lead gives some details in his email talking about signing a non-compete contract and some further details. At the end he writes "You will be doing work for John SMith as an ATEK person".
I have no idea what this means, and would rather not appear foolish by inquiring. I'd appreciate any help. |

Most likely means you are being contracted out to ATEK, but are not employed directly by them. It is very common for Indian firms to have Americans on-site, with the Indian development out of the country. Those firms are extremely happy whenever they get an American lead, but you being hired depends on ATEK liking you.
At least that's my best guess, from being in a similar situation. |

I am still confused. So ATEK is a company? I googled the name, but all that fit could be this http://www.atek-solutions.com/home.htm
Thanks |

There is also Atek.com - a large computer company. I'm only guessing, but I believe you would be working as a psuedo-Atek employee under contract, but being paid by an outsourcing company. Like I said, its not uncommon.
Of course, maybe some more information as to how you got your lead and who you spoke to could help clarify the situation. |

Outsourcing is very common and extremely exploitative. Basic concept is pay the contractor as little as possible, and charge the company your working for as much as possible.
If ever i get a call about a job where the employment company is going to pay me & i work for a different company i tell them to shove the job where the sun doesn't shine.

There really is not much more, I met the person at a local networking meeting, exchanged cards and then received an email about a possible lead. Hopefully Moonday I will speak to him in person and get some more info. My main concern was the reference to ATEK. He used it in his email like it was a common word/acronym. Code:

I understand your views and if this is the case I will really have to think it over. But this is quite a common practice, not just in the IT field. Before changing to IT I worked in biotech and towards the end, I had 3 different jobs in the span of a year where an employment company hired me out. Pretty frustrating and nerve-racking. |
