What is the web developers role in setting up online payments

hey

just wondering what is the web developers role in setting up online payments and what is the sites owners role.

can the payments be taken on the owners site or is it always done through a third parties web site like Paypal.

any information is good, thanks.

Hi,

Technically-speaking payments can be taken on the owner's site, but why reinvent the wheel? Services such as Paypal are easy to use, free (minus charges) and, most of all, secure. As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong), if you were to store such sensitive data as credit card details, addresses etc. in your own database and they were not sufficiently secured, you could be in violation of the Data Protection Act.

Hope this is helpful,
Liam.
