Discuss a good c++ book and free compiler? in the C Programming forum on Dev Shed.
a good c++ book and free compiler? C programming forum discussing all C derivatives, including C#, C++, Object-C, and even plain old vanilla C. These languages are low level languages, and used on projects such as device drivers, compilers, and even whole computer operating systems.

a good c++ book and free compiler?
Well, I've decided I'm going to launch into some traditional programming languages. I've tried Microsoft's products before, but have gotten discouraged because they make even the simplest tasks complicated.

Does anyone recommend a good C++ book that goes from the basics but still includes all the advanced material? (probably 1000+ plus pages or so)

Also, what should I use for a compiler? I would prefer something open-source.

How about gcc??
Have not tried the windows version but it is here: http://www.gnu.org/directory/djgpp.html

So do these compilers create programs with windows interfaces, or are the interfaces DOS?
