Automating programs in Visual Basic

What I would like to do is be able to write a program that can read and write information from a 3rd party program that is running in the background. The program is a mainframe emulator that would basically just display information that i would like to be able to select, analyze, and write back. i do not have access to the source code of the program. Any help would be great.
