Cross platform with C#

I understand C# is similar to java.

I also know that I can get java bytecode to run on solaris, freebsd, linux, windwos etc(at least in theory)

How well does C# do this?

Meaning if I code in Windows is it going to be the same on linux, freebsd. etc?

Can I even do this?

check the thread attacking C# in this section .
They are talking about a project called Mono that would let you do this ... aparently
