I think ColdFusion will be fine, if not better off. Adobe has no competing product and ColdFusion is doing very well (CFMX 7 is selling even better than expected).

Now things like Adobe GoLive, MM Fireworks, MM Flashpaper, and MM Freehand are probably in big trouble...

As long as they dont even breathe on CF...I've invested way too much in this language. Though I am learning PHP just to widen my effectiveness. No worries about aquisitions with PHP...(crosses fingers)

I have been doing the same Alas, getting into PHP as well, as I really like CF but need to expand my knowledge to include other languages.

I have not heard any feedback as yet re CFMX7, glad that it is doing well. Not really that keen on Adobe GoLive or Freehand and Flashpaper anyway so...although I like fireworks good when you want to do something quick and simple and not as cost prohibitive as Photoshop

Yes, if anything the merger just spells out what should probably have been obvious already: ColdFusion developers must not put all their eggs in one basket. Get out there and diversify by learning something like Java or C#. Not only does it give you other career options if CF someday fades away, but you can use what you learn in a real OO language to improve your CF coding.

For all that is sacred in this world...don't go over that bridge because once you do, you've burned it.

What follows is my opinion and I have not a shred of proof to back it up. I have no proof because I don't spend my time searching for it. I know what I like and dislike. My reasons for what I like are in favor of progression in web development and I feel MIcrosoft is severely lacking in that department (think IE7...or rather, where is it and do we have a binding promise it will be any better then Firefox?). So read on if you simply want to know my opinion.

Most Microsoft 'stuff' is not future orientated. It doesen't age well, in other words. Learn something that advances the future of program development. Something that can be usable and effective five years from now.

I'm sure we all remember the .net debacle...and asp, which collapsed under its own weght. Microsoft is good at making stuff accessible to the masses but terrible at motivating it forward outside of monetary reasons.

I would lament the day you fall prey to the siren of Microsoft when it comes to web development. Have they really proven themselves as web inovators or just as thieving cheaters?

Stay here with us! We aren't rich but we're smart for thinking "future, future, future"!

Nathan

A search of Monster.com for ".NET", "ASP.NET" or "C#" will yield you thousands and thousands of results. Whether you think that something like C# will be around for a long time, it is certainly true that in the now they are in demand. Java is really the only other language choice (and since CF uses Java it is also a useful choice).
