Not clear what this has to do with ColdFusion.

You're off to a great start.

What platform are you running on? How do you access the server, do you work directly on the server or remotely? What restrictions are there to accessing the server (closed ports, etc)? Must the other users have their own account? Do you need source code control? There are about a dozen more questions I could ask based on the answers to the above....

No, because I can't tell what the question is. OS and file permissions on a web server have nothing to do with your chosen programming language. Windows and UNIX both have differing ways to set file and directory permissions to allow read or write access. On Windows you right click on the directory and set permissions that way. On UNIX you use chmod. A Google search or a search through the Devshed forums that cover those operating systems will provide full details. The topic of OS and file security is vast and, again, doesn't have anything to do with CF (or any other application server).

k

Okay I know how to set permissions in Windows, I just thought it was different if I was doing it for CF or something, hence the I'm new! I just posted in this thread *IN CASE* it WAS related to CF, and was set differently according to languages.. So anyhoo I know how to set permissions in Windows (well i know how to get there hehe) Which would I set it as? I see...

Permissions for Administrator:
Full Control
Modify
Read & Execute
Read
Write
Special Permissions

All except Special Permissions are checked..

.. But once I set the permission....How does the user who is going to be updating my site get to it in the first place to edit? They are currently a user on my site.. I want it so when they click save... they can also click refresh on my site.. and see the difference.. If you could point me to a page that'd be great if you dont feel like explaining I didn't know what to search yahoo for or I would have done it before posting.

If the users are on the same LAN as your web server, you can share the directory and allow them access that way. They'll be prompted with a user name and password when they try to access the share, and once authenticated they can treat that shared folder like a local folder, just limited by the permissions you've set on the folders and files in the share. If the users are remote, you'll have to set up an FTP server to let them add and modify files through FTP.

But since I still don't know your situation or what you really want to accomplish, what tools are being used, the network environment, etc., this really can't be answered. Web server, web application, and operating system security (and related policies and processes) is a massive, complex topic and getting answers depends on knowing what the situation is and what the desired results are. I would point to to a site if I could, but like I said you'll have to provide more information on whether the users are remote, anonymous users or LAN users or something else.
