Open Sourceness

Hi all, can't say I've used Cold Fusion before, mainly because of price and all..

Anyway I was reading an earlier post and knowticed somone say about Cold Fusion not being Open Source and that that would be good. Probably a silly idea but if anyone is intersted i wouldn't mind maybe working on one..

It's certainly do-able. For example, these guys market a mostly CFML-compatible CF clone. It's not open source, though

Hi CFGeek, I was looking at the URL you gave me.. and judging by there products I'm fairly certain there all lovey dovey with Java, not that theres much wrong with that its just not my favourate thing ever!!! I mean (and sorry in advance to anyone this may offend but) It's speed is vastly exaduated, It leeks like a house without a roof and it's claims of being totally platform idependent are......

Anyway CFML looks allot more complex than at first glance - allot of tags to recreate - but still looking fun, as i dont know much about CF other than the Syntax and idea behind it id really like some info on what an open source version would be required to do exactly and or a derivitive instead of a clone, any improvments that you can think of and etc.

Other than that as soon as I have some free time.. hack away day.

that it's tag based. This makes the learning curve much much easier for people with no programming background. You can quite easily get a dynamic website up and running in just a couple of hours. No, it won't be perfect and will probably be filled with holes and problems, but for someone with no previous experience it is very easy to learn.

I'm not sure how you'd go about making it open source though. Obviously it can be done but the investment (in terms of time) would probably be rather high. About two years ago there was some language that was being developed that supposedly was like open-source CF but I don't think it ever really did anything. Most likely not enough people working on it together. That's the beauty of open-source ... the number of people willing to dedicate their time and resources into making a better product for the sake of making a better product.

Hey, is ColdFusion XHTML compliant? I've looked around and i cant find any information about it. Other than that I've been working on it and it seems to be working pretty good, no error captring yet and only a few tags but the engine is comming along.
one thing I may have to add to it is XHTML style tag ends "/>" to aid parsing, would that be a problem?

I think you're getting XML and XHTML confused, but you can terminate elements with no closing tag in CF. I do it all the time, out of habit.
