Our own board!

Looks like we have our own board now. So how many CF coders are reading devshed? Do you use CF by choice or are you forced by situation, employers or clients? What do you think the future holds for CFMX?

We use CFML for our intranet sites at work. I wouldn't necessarily say I'm 'forced'; its an interesting language, I enjoy working with it. Its kind of cool to switch gears from coding PHP to CFML in the course of one day. Keeps things interesting.

Seems like programmers/developers who are versed in multiple languages tend to be much more desirable in the job market than those who arent. Might as well know all of the different technologies that are out there, you never know what you might need to use in a pinch.

I agree completely... while I prefer PHP to CFML, it definitely doesn't hurt to learn as much as you can.

We use CF on most of our Intranet sites where I work. I was able to convince management to allow to me to use PHP in the last application I wrote.... Overall I like php the best, but I don't mind doing CF either, good to know both.

Out of curiosity, are you running the CFML and PHP app on the same intranet server? Or, is the PHP app running on a completely different server?

OK. We had a debate inhouse if it was OK to use CFML & PHP on the same server... we ended up using separate servers. Just wanted to see how you were handling it. Thanks

You could probably have them on the same server without much of a problem, but if you can have them on seperate servers, it's probably better.

When I worked on our campus IT department, our CMS was in CFML, so I learned it about version 4 and 5 was just released when I left. I like it much better than ASP, but the fact that they never ported the engine to work on Apache in a Unix based enviroment has a strike against it as we do main deployment on SUN, AIX, ALPHA and a few BSD boxes for routers and firewalls.

We do most of our enterprise stuff in either PERL (for our older apps) and Java Servlets.

The key to programming is to learn the theory. Learning the syntax is pretty easy with about $200 worth of books on the subject.
