User logon system, e-mail them user/pass for validating account?

I have a basic logon system which works, but I need to add a validation system where the username/password is actually e-mailed to the user and the account is only valid if they click the link (like most sites), does anyone know of any good tutorials on how to do this? sorry for asking stupid questions, it's just a have a deadline of 4 weeks to complete this app and time is ticking!! thanks

No tutorials that I am aware of, but something like this would work.

1. User submits info via a form.
2. Insert the info into the database, along with a temporary identifier that is a UUID (use createUUID()). User account is initially marked inactive through a flag field in the database.
3. Use CFMAIL to email them a URL that has that UUID appended to it (something like www.mysite.com/activateaccount.cfm?refid=whatever the UUID value you set in the database was
4. User gets the email and clicks the link.
5. The activateaccount.cfm file looks up the passed UUID, and if it finds a user record matching that UUID it sets it to active.
