120GB hard drive, not working

heres my problem:
win2000pro/suse linux 8 dual boot. linux handles dual boot, im doing everything in windows
552 MHz
256 MB ram
MOBO primary IDE: 8GB HD MASTER, CD-Rom SLAVE.
MOBO secondary: 120GB western digital 7200rpm MASTER. no SLAVE

problem is, when i load up, windows finds new hardware, but then says it has been unplugged?!?. Never shown up in my computer.

In bios it is recognised, but is said to have Max Capacity 0MB.
also somwhere on same page i member it saying max capacity 8###MB (where # are digits)

thing is i dont think its a size restriction, bcoz rite now i have a different hard drive plugged in to same IDE slot.
this one has 3 partitions, 37.2, 34.1, 1.69 GB. bout 80 in total.

any ideas?
p.s i tried jumpers set to Master, Slave, CAble Select, on 120GB.
ova than that its str8 out the box.
80GB harddrive has jumpers set to : 'Master or Single'

Hey Bliggsy,

Are you sure your BIOS and chipset can handle the drive?

It's a long read but well worth it:
http://www.pctechguide.com/tutorials/HardDrive1.htm

Here's an excerpt:

Quote:
If your second hard drive is going to have to be purchased, it's wise to check which version of ATA your system supports before spending your hard-earned cash. It doesn't make sense to pay a premium price for an ultra fast drive if your motherboard's chipset isn't capable of supporting it. As a guide ATA/33 first appeared in the second half of 1997, ATA/66 in 1999, ATA/100 in 2000 and ATA/133 a year later. If your system dates from the 1990s, you also need to confirm that its BIOS doesn't impose a restriction on the size of drive that can be supported that might make the upgrade not worthwhile. There have been several of these over the years.

Check your motherboard manual for what drives it supports.

Tom

I had trouble at first with my WD hard drive cause of my ignorance with them. I'm used to Maxtors with either Master or Slave jumper settings. With my WD hard drives, they have Master with no slave, Master with slave, and Slave settings. Make sure you choose the Master with no slave setting for it or else the drive won't work and you'll get an error message.

I'm under the understanding that all the ATA drives are backwards compatible. If your HD is ATA 133 and your Mobo is ATA 33, you'll run at 33. Hard drives are dirt cheap now. No one is paying premiom prices for an IDE drive these days.
