3com PCMCIA problems

I am trying to connect an Ergo laptop (running windows 98) to my network directly to my router.

I have 2 network cards:

Accton Cheetah 2228 and
3com etherlink III 3c589d.

The laptop recongnises both cards when I try them but I cannot get a link light on either the router or the dongle. I have tried various cables but still no joy.

anyone help?

What was the result of "ipconfig /all" and "ping (the roughter)"? What is the function and setting of the dongle. Can't you even connect to another PC?

Both of them are excellent cards usually no problem.
