ADSL modem to router problem
Just got my adsl yesterday afternoon, so this morning I had free time I thought I`d hook everything up.
I used to have cable, which was running though my 4 port cable/dsl router. For some reason though, my adsl modem and router just won`t communicate with each other. No LAN lights at all, yet if I unhook everything and plug my cable modem back in, we have business the two communicate. I know I have to configure the router for dsl (PPPoE) purposes, which I have done, but even so that is for the access manager, not to make the modem and router speak. What is going on. I have the correct cables hooked up (cross over between modem and router), but still nothing. The dsl modem doesn`t see the router. |

Does the DSL work on a single machine without the router? I'd get that going first. If so, maybe list your router model. Easier to pinpoint quirks that way.

Yes, when I run the dsl modem straight through to my PC, the modem LAN light comes on. As soon as I unplug and run the PC through my router, the modem LAN light is off. I still have my cable hooked up (how I`m on here!!), and the router and cable modem work fine together. The router was purchased from ebay a few months back, and was new. The wierd thing is there is no name on it, underneath is the sticker that says `internet broadband router`, along with a serial number and the FCC information!! Having said, the router has been fine since I got it, and still works fine on my cable modem. |

well u may have just lucked out and got a router that doesn't work with dsl modems
i don't think all of them are meant to work with both modems, even if u configure it right. i may be very wrong, but if the router i got says cable/dsl broadband router, i dont see why there can't be just a cable broadband router, or vice versa.oh and you should probably put this in the networking forums, where edwinbrains can help you out on this stuff. |

I never noticed a network forum
Hopefully one of the mods can move it?I assume it is a cable and dsl router as the cofiguratiuon booklet mentions how to configure for cable and PPPoE (dsl). |

Yeah! constant is making a good fundamental point, I think. Though I don't know your area's providers well. But there should be instructions from the provider, proper dhcp, dns, mtu, PPPoE enabled or disabled on XP etc., settings according to providers whether it is cable or dsl.
So much so that, there is no reason that dsl settings might be same as cable settings. |

Finally got it working. Someone said try using straight through cables on all ports, including the modem to router connection. It worked. Now connected up and online.
Yet, using the cable modem, I had to use a cross over cable betweem the modem and router. ![]() |

?(We don't know your network configuration and functions of cable modem and router.)But if it is as you say, the fact may be simple and either of the two must be cascade port. Is there any cascade switch? |
