Best Consumer Grade HDD's
I'm fed up with Maxtor's quality. Granted I am getting a new HDD because the one I had shot the crap after 18 months and 9 of those were in storage.

I've used western digitals before and had pretty good luck, about 3 - 4 years before it dies.

Anyother recomendations? Mainly it will be going into my 1,2 Ghz Althon box running FreeBSD. It will proably be on 24/7 but used maybe 90 minutes a day.

Its an ATA-100 mobo so I'll need an IDE.

I've used Maxtor hdd for years now with really no problems.

I have heard that seagate makes pretty descent hdd's. Maybe ask this question over at http://forums.devhardware.com - seems to be quite a few knowledgable people there on hardware.

seagate is my first choice, western digital would be second, maxtor, only if they are free, or i have no alternative at the time.

As stated previously(and you seem to have found out) I would definitely try to avoid Maxtor. Western Digital seems to be pretty good but I would watch out with their new 8MB cache drives. I recently purchased a 120GB version (model:WD1200JBRTL) and it doesn not seem to work with my motherboard(Asus A7N8X deluxe). It gives me a blue screen error after the add new hardware wizard tries to configure it. My system does work fine with a 40GB WD drive for my OS and a 120GB Maxtor drive I use for storage(both of those only have 2MB cache).

Thanks, I finally got around to getting a new WD. I used WD's in the acient past (like 10 years ago for 50MB drives). Got the smallest at best buy (a 60GB) drive. FreeBSD is going on this and chances are I really need maybe 5GB at most, but I guess the extra space won't hurt.
