Best LCD Monitor
Hey, I'm planning on upgrading my CRT monitor to an LCD one. I use my computer for work and games. I don't use it for extensive use on graphics or DVD editing or anything like that. I've looked at a couple of good monitors, but I can't seem to get a straight answer on which one is best.
These are the monitors that I'm looking into: Samsung 173p Samsung 173s (much cheaper, but don't know how that affects its quality) LG 1715s Hercules ProphetView (I've heard this is the best, but no one sells it anymore, unless anyone here knows where to get one) Those are just the four that have caught my eye. Does anyone have any of them and can share their opinions? Or does anyone know any other monitor that I should consider? I'm looking for a 17in LCD, at most $500. Thanks for the help. |

sharp's the best. You can see the difference when u placed a sharp beside another brand.
also sharp created LCD tech. so they are leading the pack. Other brands are about the same. Samsung and all. ps. samsung is a copy cat. It just copies the design and idea off the japanese companies. phones, lcds, everything.. sony? looks good

I don't know about those, but I use two AOC LM720A monitors. They were really cheap compared to others when I bought them, but excellent quality and I've had no problems with them.

One big IMHO of the author. Yes, Sharp makes decent LCDs and have been since they dropped all CRTs in favor of LCD, but they are not godlike. And I completely disagree with point about Samsung. They are not copycats - hell they are in the league of their own, there isn't anybody left to copy from. I too have one of AOC screens at home myself - excellent value for the money, and by itself it is pretty good, but in side-by-side comparison with more pricey ones, it start looking fairly bleak. Personally, I am super happy with my Samsung 172x - it is also an excellent choice for the gaming fans. I grabbed one for home and one for the office when they first came out, and had been using it since without any problems.

I'm not going to get into the brand name comparisons, but it is good that you don't use it for a lot of graphics editing because the CRT will likely still be a better choice for that. One tip: give yourself a week to get used to the LCD. Also experiment with various resolutions that you might not normally think of using. Mine is set to 1152x864 and it looks better than it does at 1024x768. (FWIW I have a budget BENQ).
