Best place to store a server?

I post this under cooling as well...

We have to move a server about mid-tower size out of the cool computer room. Will my cubicle be good enough for it? Room temperature environment.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Do you mean 'store' as in warehouse turned off?
Or do you plan to run it in your cubie?

Most real servers have really loud fans and disks, I would not want one near me when I'm working.

If its turned off, all it has to be is dry and livable for humans, probably 50 degrees F to 100 degrees F.

It is actually quite small of a server...i don't recall it being noisy but will an enclosure help with noise?

It will be running. Thinking about getting a UPS and some kidn of storage thing with cool fans... will that be sufficcient?

Thanks

enclosures help noise a little and hurt cooling a lot.

Its usually a lot more effective and cheaper to go to Frye's and buy some fans. Most computers come with $3 fans, if you gets some $10 fans, they are a lot quieter. There are also hard drive isolation kits, they use rubber pads to keep the disk vibrations from shaking the whole case.

The best approach is to put the server far from humans.

Don't be tempted to put it in the supply closet, they ususally have very bad air circulation and no A/C

I think one small server (except for maybe the closet) you can put just about anywhere. One lone server is not going to cause the room to jump to 90 degrees. The offices's central air should keep the room plenty cool.

I tend to agree, but I've got a Dell Poweredge server, that only in a mid-tower case, that sounds like a jet taking off.
Its only a single CPU and dual disk (raid) so the power/heat is not a big deal, but the noise is amazing

Must depend on the model, I have a low-end poweredge along with another Dell at my workstation, and I don't find the noise from the two machines much different. I do have a couple larger, older Dell servers in the computer room and they would probably bother me if I had to sit next to them all the time

The old model of Dell poweredge is not that noisy. The screeching sound happens only when booting or when re-applying GPO or when the server is dying heh that's a bad thing.

Put exhaust fans on the ceiling or anywhere near and the room temp will suffice.

as long as you have sufficient air flow it should all be ok, you can always monitor your temps through the BIOS.
if it starts looking bad, then add some extra fans and make sure they are placed in a method that creates air flow...not hinders it.
