You can get a heck of a lot of computer for that sort of money. Check out HP and dell, maybe alienware, though that will be pricey. Falcon Northwest and ABS also are good performance. I'd definitely consider building your own as well, since that would most likely save you some money. Just comparison shop and see how much you can get for your money.

Build it yourself

Build it yourself, you will save at least 50% of your hard earned money if you do so and you can build it exactly how you'd like it to be built.

How on earth did you do that? Were the parts stolen? I shopped around a lot, and spent that much on ram and a video card. Or did you get all off brand stuff from ebay or something?

My recommendations:

AMD Athlon XP 3000+ (400FSB)
Gigabyte nVidia nForce 400 Ultra + MCP-T (w/RAID0)
2 GB (512 MB x 4) 400 MHz DDR RAM
WD Raptor 74 GB hdd (x2)
ATi Radeon 9700 Pro or 9800XT
Lite-On LTC-48161H
Lite-On SOHW-812S

While AMD Athlon 64 is the way to go, it is already known that the current socket will be replaced shortly with Socket 939, rendering current hardware basically obsolete. This doesn't mean it won't work, only that in the near future current Socket 754 will no longer be available. That's why I'd wait until the platform matures a bit more...
