What did you burn to the CD? What OS did you burn on, and what are you transferring to?

Once upon a time there was a virus spoof that asked users to delete a legitimate executable which handled DOS long file name compatability. I often wonder, if people did that and never restored this, what kind of problems might arise?

I mention this because, depending on what format you burned the CD using, it may be handling the file naming convention differently than Windows. I believe this (filename structures) is a likely suspect (though not necessarilly the deleting of part of your OS).

Or, it could just simply be a bad sector which is causing something to abort abnormally.

If you have the patience, try copying the files one by one, or folder by folder, rather than try to dump the whole disc. You should get most of your files, and be able to identify the bad ones.

Alternatively, you may simply be trying to copy too many files in one operation and merely exceeded your system's ability to cope.

oh, sorry, i wrote 30mins instead of 30secs. so when i copy the problematic file (such files are about 3-4 from whole cd), in about 30-45secs i get that error...

Operation System when copied: WinXP(english)
Now(transferring to): win2000(german)
format: just data copy, burned files of a game to cd.

I dont think there is long filename problem, because the files which i cannot copy have names no longer than 8 symbols...

And of course i also tried to copy one by one...

seems to be bad sector problem?
very sad

thank you anyway

Still incomplete information.

How did you copy and burn?

It is telling you, " illegal Dos function"

Is this a correct message? Have you tried to copy them in Dos Emulation Prompt, Command Console, or by explorer?

The said game is a Dos-based?

The data corruption is thinkable, but itself is not always illegal function.

The below is the accidentally met example in Google,

(^^;?(I couldn't find "illegal Dos function" error.)
