Computer does not work - blinking cursor

I am normally expert at this, however this has got me.

I am workig on a computer for friend, the computer turns on only to a blinking cursor in top left of screen.

    I have done the following:

Removed AGP card using on-board video - nothing
Moved out SDRAM, used one or two, interchange, tested RAM discovered good in other machine - nothing
Removed all other (left video) cards - nothing

Hard drive works on another computer, files transferred off. What do you think it might be? Any help would be appreciated.

    H/W:
    Asus TUSL2-C
    Matrox G4
    256 PC 133 SDRAM

You should at least get the BIOS POST screen appearing... theoretically. Don't know much about the H/W aspect, but usually if that doesn't appear it would seem the battery's gone or the BIOS is knackered. Have you tried replacing the battery, or clearing the CMOS (usually need to short two points or apply a jumper change).

I have since posting removed battery and reset CMOS. Nothing - my guess is likely a tweaked-up CMOS chip - new board will be my recommendation.

Do you have any other ideas?

Sounds like the only real solution. Or you could always pretend it's a ZX-Spectrum in disguise...
