It would seem easier to purchase a 15" LCD Flat Panel Display, remove its stand, then integrate it into the dashboard. Then, with the help of proper cabling (VGA) for your old Compaq laptop, you can extend it to the back of the car (backseat or trunk?).

What exactly do you plan to do with the laptop once you have it installed? Also, could you provide us with a link to those pics?

Yes, if you have pic, please post. I work with LCD panels in embedded systems, and typically, the connection from the MoBo to the VGA panel has not been standardized. As far as I have seen, each MoBo/VGA panel has its own connectors, and there doesn't seem to be a standard. One thing to remember, LCD panels uses backlight inverters to power the backlights. These inverters must be mounted as close to the LCD as possible, so that the wire run from the inverter output to the LCD is minimized.

The information given about connector standards is from my own experience, and may be incorrect.

i decided to go with the seperate lcd idea, i dont have any pics yet, but i prolly will when im done, and i dont have any computer technical problems left, just the automotive technical problems... but if you still want the pics, ill prolly post them in a few weeks

i decided to have the monitor free, the center console isnt large enough for the 14 in, and i figured if i could temorarily attach it, to detach it when im not in my car, it would be less out of sight, and thus less likely to be broken into. luckily my car has easily removeable panels in the floor right next to the door that run all the way up to the stereo unit in the front, through which i am running the sound.
thanks a bunch dudes,
-arne
p.s. kebo, my power port on the laptop is shorted, and i had the case off and plugged it in and wiggled it, and i can see a spark at one of the corners, i removed the motherboard and turned it over, and saw that the solder dripped to that side. would it work if i took a soldering pen to that side, and let it drip back into place to stop the short?
thanks again

The solder dripped to the side of the MoBo? Was it sloppy workmanship, or did someone do some rework to it?
yeah I suppose it would fix the short if the solder blob was touching something to complete a circuit.

how exactly would i go about posting links to the pics, ive got no website, does it matter?
thanks

well now i need some more help

so my head unit in the car is a 4 channel output cd player (pioneer) and the laptop only has left/right outputs. ive decided to bypass the head unit altogether, and im wondering if anyone knows of a switching device that will let me use the 4 speakers as two channels with my laptop, and then switch it to let me use the radio with 4 channels, one per speaker.
anyone know of a device? thanks
